Born in Kansas City (USA), Donald Sulzen received his musical education at the North Texas State University and at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. He studied Lieder and chamber music with Martin Katz, Geoffrey Parsons and John Wustman. Donald Sulzen accompanied in master-classes of Astrid Varnay, Eleonor Steber, Magda Olivero, George Shirley and Hermann Prey, and – himself a prizewinner at international competitions – at important chamber music and singing competitions like the ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg.
Sulzen gives concerts regularly with Julie Kaufmann, Michiè Nakamaru, Jo Ann Pickens, Marilyn Schmiege, James Wagner and Felicia Weathers.
In the years 1988-1994 the pianist taught at the Mozarteum College in Salzburg. Since then he has been a lecturer at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, and conducts a Lieder class at the Hochschule für Musik there.
